Joan Levin has successfully defended physicians and hospitals in complex medical cases and appellate matters for over 30 years throughout New York State and is widely respected as one of the preeminent medical defense attorneys. Joan, who has been at VLMMR since 2001, began her legal career at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP. Coming from a family of physicians and dentists and feeling like a frustrated doctor herself, she left to pursue medical malpractice defense litigation. Except for one year when Joan worked on the plaintiff’s side of litigation, where she first met her husband, Chuck Lohrfink, in court on the opposite side of the case, she has defended physicians and hospitals in complex medical cases and appellate matters for 30+ years.
Joan received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated from NYU School of Law, where she was a member of the Law Review, in 1980. She was raised in Providence, RI, but has lived in New York City and Westchester County, NY since law school.
